Synth-pop pioneers Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) are set to make history this summer by headlining an outdoor concert at Rochdale Town Hall Square on Friday, 7 August 2026.ย
Despite famously recording their debut single ‘Electricity’ at the town’s legendary Cargo Studios back in 1979, the electronic music duo have remarkably never performed a live show in Rochdale before.
The landmark open-air gig forms part of the ‘Rochdale Music Stories’ cultural campaign, which highlights the borough’s significant impact on British music history.
The campaign originally launched during the town’s tenure as the Greater Manchester Town of Culture to honour the local roots of influential electronic and post-punk acts.
Rochdale music scene heritage reunion
Sharing the historic bill for the first time in 47 years are post-punk legends Peter Hook & The Light, delivering a career-spanning set of Joy Division and New Order classics, and Manchester’s premier punk-funk innovators A Certain Ratio.
All three foundational acts share a deep history rooted in the former Cargo Studios on Kenion Street, a facility engineered by John Brierley that served as a critical incubator for the North West sound.
Adding to the Mancunian heritage on display, Inspiral Carpets keyboardist and veteran radio presenter Clint Boon will host the evening and DJ between the live performances.
The high-energy event will take place against the backdrop of the recently restored Rochdale Town Hall Square.
The stunning heritage venue has recently undergone a multi-million-pound revamp, transforming it into a premier space for major cultural events.
The Friday night concert will also serve as the kickoff for a full weekend of festivities in the borough, with the annual Rochdale Feel Good Festival scheduled to follow on Saturday, 8 August.
